Where Sapkowski arguably took it a step further was with the jab about "intelligent people" not playing games. I don't blame people for feeling insulted. Personally, I can still take it as a playful roast from an old fart who knows he's an old fart, a dry joke that didn't quite land right for everyone. Or maybe he is just straight-up dickish.
